My paintings are made using fragments of old paper, drawing and acrylic paint which is then mounted onto canvas. The paper used has included parts of maps, letters from friends as well as diagrams and photographs retrieved from discarded books.
The imagery collected is then sifted through, layered and reworked many times. I studied printmaking which has continued to inform the way I paint particularly in the masking out of specific areas of the work. Information on the letters, maps and diagrams is translated into marks of a different scale and colour.
My studio is based at home in Oxford and is full of neatly ordered piles of inspirational material which I source from car boot sales and charity shops. Much of the imagery I use is also based on the shapes and colours of these objects. The music which I listen to while working is important for setting the mood and pace of the paintings and helps to create an interplay between forms, layers and colour.
